Together for pollinators

Zoo LIFE Pollinators is built on collaboration. The project brings together zoological facilities, universities, conservation organisations and technical experts from across Europe, combining complementary expertise in habitat restoration, pollinator monitoring, conservation breeding, environmental education, citizen science, communication and stakeholder engagement.
Alongside the project beneficiaries and associated partners, a growing network of zoological facilities, municipalities, schools, universities, NGOs, land managers and other stakeholders is helping to adapt, replicate and expand the project’s approaches in new locations.
Each participating organisation can contribute according to its expertise, resources and local context, while sharing a common goal: creating healthier habitats and more pollinator-friendly communities across Europe.

Our pollinator friendly institutions

Monkey Park

Founded in 1991, Monkey Park is located in the south of the island of Tenerife, near Los Cristianos. Our park is a centre dedicated to the conservation, reproduction and care of endangered species, as well as providing a home for rescued animals.

The Transect Walk

The project uses the Pollard transect methodology, adopted by the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (eBMS) for standardized monitoring of butterflies and, more recently, other wild pollinators. This method involves defining a fixed route of 500–1000 meters, which is walked regularly throughout the flight season to record the number and species of individuals observed. Following recommendations from the European Commission, the methodology has been extended to wild Apoidea and hoverflies to harmonize the monitoring of key pollinating insects.
The adoption and harmonization of a common survey method across all partner facilities is supported by Butterfly Conservation Europe, an associated partner that coordinates the eBMS network.
In addition to entomological monitoring, Zoo LIFE Pollinators will carry out phytosociological surveys and count entomogamous floral units at five fixed 1 m² points along each partner’s transect to assess the status and effectiveness of ecological restoration measures.

Are you ready to take action for wild pollinators?
Zoo LIFE Pollinators invites zoological facilities, municipalities, schools, universities, NGOs, land managers and other stakeholders to express their interest in replicating or adapting one or more project activities in new locations.
Interested organisations can explore activities related to habitat restoration, pollinator monitoring, conservation breeding, environmental education, citizen science, communication and stakeholder engagement, selecting those that best match their expertise, resources, needs and local context.
Each expression of interest will support an initial assessment of the organisation’s interests, readiness and local conditions. Where replication appears potentially feasible, the project may provide guidance for a more detailed feasibility analysis, based on a common set of guiding questions that will remain available after the project ends.
By taking part, organisations can also connect with a growing European network committed to creating healthier habitats and more pollinator-friendly communities.

The LIFE programme is the European Union’s financial instrument dedicated to the environment and climate action, active since 1992. It finances projects that promote nature conservation, sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate protection, contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal and the 2030 Agenda. The programme is managed by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA) on behalf of the European Commission.
